The 11+ is a competitive entrance assessment used by grammar schools and some independent schools to select students with strong academic promise. Usually taken in Year 6, it forms an important part of the secondary school admissions process. The exam evaluates a child’s skills in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non‑Verbal Reasoning. Test dates differ by region and school, with many assessments held during the autumn term or early in the academic year.
Students hoping to gain entry into grammar schools typically sit the 11+ in the autumn of Year 6. This selective assessment is designed to identify pupils who demonstrate high academic ability. Depending on the school or local authority, the exam may include English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non‑Verbal Reasoning. Most tests are paper‑based, last around two hours, and often use a multiple‑choice format. The level of challenge helps distinguish top‑performing students within the age group.
The format and syllabus of the 11+ vary depending on the school. Some grammar schools are part of a consortium, meaning one exam result can be used for several schools. Others set their own individual tests, requiring separate exams.
Commonly assessed subjects include:
- English – Comprehension of unseen texts, spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG), vocabulary; some schools also assess creative writing
- Mathematics – Key Stage 2 content with questions that test problem‑solving and application
- Verbal Reasoning (VR) - Word‑based logic, sequences, codes, and language patterns
- Non‑Verbal Reasoning (NVR) – Visual reasoning involving shapes, patterns, and spatial awareness
As VR and NVR are not part of the national curriculum, many students benefit from focused preparation in these areas.
The total number of questions depends on the exam board and paper structure. For GL Assessment exams, students usually sit two or three papers covering different subject combinations.

- Maths – 50 questions
- Verbal Reasoning - 80 questions
- Non‑Verbal Reasoning – 80 questions
Paper formats may include:
- English & Maths together, with VR & NVR in a separate paper
- English combined with VR, and Maths combined with NVR
- Three individual papers focusing on different subjects
Each paper generally lasts 45 to 60 minutes and may begin with a short set of practice questions. Most schools schedule two or three papers on the same day, allowing short breaks between them. Some schools choose to spread the exams across different days.
